International
In the summer of 2012, Atlantic Challenge Canada will participate in the 2012 International contest of seamanship in Bantry, Ireland. This is the second time that the contest has been to Bantry and it promises to be a wonderful event. The Bantry 2012 committee has already begun preparing to host the Atlantic Challenge International community and promises a good time.
Atlantic Challenge Canada will be recruiting 15-20 youth crew members from all over Canada to represent our country in the 2012 contest. Any youth aged 15 and up (and even a limited number of adults!) may apply to be on the crew. Applications will be made available sometime during 2011 and will be posted on the web site. A crew member does not need any previous experience to join the Canadian crew. Individuals should be motivated, enthusiastic and ready for the arduous training schedule in the weeks leading up to the event. Training will likely start during the last week of June, 2012 and continue until we depart for Ireland in mid-July. You need only to ask a previous crew-member how life-changing this experience can be!
The crews will be housed together during the event and encouraged to interact through the many activities scheduled. Nightly theme activities allow interaction amongst participants and provide an opportunity to experience various cultures. The 2006 crew had the honour of placing second in the last contest in Italy and were recognized for their accomplishments by our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper and our local MP, Bruce Stanton.
Canada has participated in the contest beginning in 1992, in addition to hosting it at Discovery Harbour in 1994 in conjunction with the Tall Ship GB ’94 festival and hosting the contest for a second time in 2010 in Midland, Ontario. Past contests we have participated in outside of Canada include France, Ireland, Denmark, United Kingdom, Italy and the United States.
